2016

WORKOUT 16.1

Dave Castro wasn’t even onsite for the live announcement at NorCal CrossFit in California. Instead, Castro announced his devilish triplet from CrossFit Jotun in Buenos Aires, Argentina.

Second of all, it wasn’t just Chyna Cho and Emily Abbott competing on the live announcement floor, as was announced prior to the event. Joining the two Games athletes were two local athletes — Scott McCoy and Joanna Prado-Pacheco. For the first time ever, we watched normal people just like us compete alongside the best of the best in the Open workout, further underscoring the accessibility and scalability of the sport.

Going into the live announcement, analysts discussed the interesting dichotomy between the two athletes, referring to Abbott as the muscle to Cho’s motor. However, despite those characterizations, Abbot pulled out a surprising finish, defeating Cho by an impressive 11 reps with a total score of 290.

Games athletes Björgvin Karl Guðmundsson and Dan Bailey went head-to-head in a North Carolina garage for the announcement. Guðmundsson took third place in his second Games appearance in 2015 whereas Bailey, a five-time Games athlete, followed closely in fourth. 

Starting with a 4-minute clock…

The fourth installment of the 2016 CrossFit Open was announced from the Schriever Air Force Base in Colorado Springs, Colorado.

This announcement featured a head-to-head matchup we were all dying to see. Katrin Davidsdottir, the reining Fittest Woman on Earth and three-time Games athlete took on Sara Sigmundsdottir, the rookie who wore the leader’s jersey through eight consecutive events at the 2015 CrossFit Games.

In addition to the two Games athletes, there were three airmen who were awarded the chance to compete on the floor during the Open announcement. After a competition similar to the one they were (unknowingly) about to face during the 16.4 announcement, third place 1st Lieutenant Mark Skinner, second place 1st Lieutenant Greg Overton and first place 2nd Lieutenant Jessica Trundy were chosen to compete alongside the Dottirs.

Announced on Feb. 26 at Reebok CrossFit ONE in Canton, Massachusetts and featured 4-time CrossFit Games champion Rich Froning competing against Mat Fraser, 2014 Games runner-up. Froning won the AMRAP 224 to 221 and the max clean and jerk 343 pounds to Fraser’s 327-pound lift.

Athletes Michele Letendre and Emily Bridgers, sixth place in 2014 Games, squared off against one another during the live announcement with Bridgers taking the victory with 357 reps against Letendre’s 344 reps.

15.3 was announced March 12 from CrossFit Chicago. Games athletes Julie Foucher and Lauren Brooks competed live against each other. The WOD was as follows:

Men used a 20-pound medicine ball whereas women used 14-pound balls. Men shot to a 10-foot target and women used a nine-foot. Foucher claimed the victory with 501 reps to Brooks’ 420 reps.

15.4 was announced March 19 at CrossFit X-Factor in Portland, Oregon. Josh Bridges, fourth place in the 2014 Games, and Scott Panchik, fifth place winner in the 2014 Games went head to head during this live WOD. Panchik’s deliberate pace earned him a victory, with 147 reps to Bridges’ 122.
